intelligent robotics and machine learning—how did I become so blessed?
the core of my research project this summer involves training robots to better perform adaptive, socially-appropriate gestures as they interact with humans. this means taking the camera feed, generating appropriate replies concomitant with realistic, natural gestures.
I've read through almost a third of MIT's 6.036 (Machine Learning) notes to catch myself up on the theory. applying it, though, is going to be another hurdle.
I also have to learn C++ to make my first robot module. the Internet claims that making the leap from Java to C++ is a hellish nightmare. oh, boy. to top it off, I'll have no way to test my code, as the robot my lab ordered won't be arriving for another few weeks.
technicalities aside, I love the environment, and food is insanely cheap, with a hearty breakfast every day here being the equivalent of about $2.40. I've met some good people on the team, one of whom is reminiscent of the American rascal who never grows up. it's good company. I'm excited for what the next two months hold, and I'm thankful for this opportunity to learn and independently apply what I've read to practical experiments.
